Post Date:01/16/2026 8:22 AM

The Freedom Walkway Committee is seeking nominations for its 2026 Local Heroes Recognition. Nominations are being accepted through April 30, 2026. To learn more about nominating a local hero, including qualifications and past recipients, please visit www.freedomwalkway.com. The awards ceremony will be held in November.

Nominees may be an individual or group who have made a significant contribution to the cause of justice and equality for all citizens, and who have put at risk their reputations, security, freedom, livelihood, or even their lives. Nominees must have lived in the Rock Hill/York County area, played a significant role through advocacy or actions in promoting equality and justice for all citizens in Rock Hill/York County, and their actions/advocacy challenged existing norms and conventions in the community, placing these individuals or groups at odds with community leadership.

Freedom Walkway, located off Main Street in Old Town Rock Hill, was dedicated in November 2016 and was designed to recognize and celebrate Rock Hill’s champions for justice and equality. Boldly displaying the words “Liberty and Justice for All,” the interpretive walkway was inspired by those who have been at the forefront for greater justice and equality for all citizens, including the Friendship Nine.
