A company that manufactures parts for engines and gas turbines used in aeronautics and other industries is bringing 25 new, highly-skilled jobs to York County and hopes to add 100 more in the future.
England-based Winbro Group Technologies plans to open its operation in Waterford Business Park in Rock Hill by January 2011, according to a release from York County, Rock Hill, and the S.C. Department of Commerce.
The company uses advanced machining technologies to produce cooling holes in parts used in airplane engines and industrial gas turbines.
Investing $10.4 million in its initial setup, the company aims to carry out an additional $30 million expansion that includes building a new facility over the next five years, company and county leaders said.
That expansion will create 100 new jobs, said Robb Hudson, the company's vice president in North America.
"We have great hopes and intentions of expanding," Hudson said.
The county has offered to lower the company's tax burden for investing in York County and creating jobs.
"Opening the new facility in York County is an important step for our company's future growth plans," said Mike Arbon, CEO of Winbro Group Technologies.
South Carolina offers the company an "excellent business environment" and a "skilled workforce," Arbon said.
A "big decision maker" for the company settling on York County was its ability to partner with York Technical College, Hudson said.
The company plans to work with the college to develop a training program and curriculum that will produce skilled engineers and machine operators. The program will also help draw other manufacturers to the area, he said.
York Tech is leasing the company space in its Waterford Training Center, said Greg Rutherford, president of York Technical College.
"We have the talent, the programming and the space to get them started so they can grow here," Rutherford said.
Rock Hill will likely attract more aviation-related businesses with Boeing's plant in Charleston and other aviation manufacturers nearby, said Mark Farris, the county's economic development director.
"Winbro is a benchmark for us," Farris said. "It signals an entrance for us into this type of manufacturing that is critically important to our future," he said.
Farris was a member of the state delegation that attended the Farnborough Air Show in England this summer where he met with Winbro representatives.
York County Council Chairman Buddy Motz said, "exceptional international manufacturing companies like Winbro and the jobs and investment they bring hold the key to a resurgent and more stable economy for our area."
Winbro Group Technologies plans to hold an event next week, celebrating the company's investment in York County, but the details have not been finalized. The company is currently hiring engineers.
